To the Light

well the radio was blasting another day old tune
my mother left me for a war, for an old dragoon
the streets were burnt , no one cried, no one made a sound
my friends waited by the wayside until the end of the day
the pipes burst in the road and soaked our way
we followed that path until we came to our home
well her diamonds twinkle fast, her time don’t move
she can turn inside the evening
she’s got nothing to prove
she comes, she comes to the light
no one was speaking except the sound of an alarm
it kept me up for an hour, lying in her arms
and she comforts me and tells me, “lay your head”
so out from the darkness I hear her crying for me,
a sign that she’s coming like the old banshee,
I know she means well when she comes from the dark

Not Tonight, Not Today

I’m walking past the close of the parade
and this rain is killed by falling snow
I saw you lean into the corner listening
to all of them talking about what they know
I don’t blame you for being there
but you know you didn’t have to believe it
two coins on the ground gently gleaming
two more faces for you to believe in,
I’m so sorry for this night you say,
I need to leave before I lose my mind
things shouldn’t of turned out this way
at least not tonight, at least not today
someone outside lit a fire to burn that soft white flesh away,
I saw some old friends waving to me
as the crowds fell and made their way
I stood there looking out for you under some cold old melting tree
I saw you in your mums old car wearing the same sad look as me
as the patrons set the switch of the bright lights
I drank the cold bottles you bought me
and fell into the colors that showed me
that the lights are colder now

Waiting for Dawn

guns firing on a ridge down onto a quiet town
wind bellows up smoke to the breakdown in the blood soaked dawn
me and my friend we headed up to where they had set up
the shells dug up the sand as they let up
he shot two and I held them down
we chased them off early we held the sway, what I mean to say
is they lost their way, and they’re out there now in the firing dark
and I hear them, and I think I see them coming
we’re waiting, we’re hiding, they’re running
and we’ll stay here until the dawn
later on we dreamt it was over but we saw the drover
in the middle they were ducking for cover, so we laid back down
they must of felt the coming of shadow and they were all aglow
near our burrow, and in the moon light we shot them down

Yesterday, Yesterday

yesterday, yesterday was good
but there’s time for change in the wild wood
I’m gonna head back down to seal the quill
and let the black ink merge in the landfill
hear the ringing of chains, as they bend and coil
around the future’s neck, see it broil
many of us will be gone, dead for dreaming in the rain
with all the guilt but without the pain
and you can take yours and I’ll take mine
no running away from the scene of the crime
and yesterday was fine
I was so in love with you
with what people do to me and you
yesterday, yesterday but there’s time for change
from yesterday
he’s a born again fake, the crowd would cheer
if they could see their hands and calm their fear
being led by a wishbone, whose making a break
nothing’s gonna come through for this treasured fake
I read a story in a paper, someone lit it on fire
just a wholesome buyer, but written by a liar
oh yesterday, yesterday, won’t come around
and it’s been and gone and in this song

My Parade

wait for time to turn or you calling my name again
same talk with the same loose friends about calling you
staying young in my mind, in the windows that reflect the sun
left on a moving perch, singing out loud
and now you’re far away, and nothing will ease the pain
now trouble is on my parade
cold on the bone, from a borrowed dress
and sunday morning’s once more, once less
my words on a page, and they’re ruined in ink
see now you’re far away, and nothing will ease the pain
now trouble is on my parade
and I still don’t know
what to say

All My Brothers

sleeping through the daytime like a child
up right through the night time running wild
thinking I will never be as strong as the day is long
I saw the coward day that sunk the sun
hiding in the house where we belong
I saw the blood flow red and it ran long
and all my brothers
It’s a swift turning clock we travel on
from boy to man, from four to one
some of us who rest and grow
don’t need to know, don’t need to know
I still hear them all summer long
will they let me join them one day
I still hear them all summer long
will they turn me away
we lost three fighting Booker in Virginia
one came back with a body full of holes
I wouldn’t let my mother come and see him
all bound in blood and gold
it’s a long lonely night we gaze upon
when all the stars are dead and gone
the moon it shines on all our heads
and to the west, and to the west

Making You Talk

lay me down easy I know I’ve done wrong
I was out in the desert and planting head stones
you bought it, I stammered my way around love
I kindled the fires that burnt the embers above
lay me down ready with a sympathy wind
if I don’t start to feel better I may do it all again
and it’s the only way of making you talk
for it’s the only way of making you talk
don’t mention the scandal it pulls me in two
the lies I kept with me and the truth that you threw
I’m heady with darkness, don’t perch on my throne
I never asked for your distance or for you to leave me alone
You brought me through and left me alone
I’m not what you need anymore

Help You Mend

you’re too young to know any way out and you were drinking long before
anyone had time to show
no one knew this day was sad for thinking but then a fading trend and
everybody really wants to know
we have tough breaks, we have people to face, we have time
before you have to feel that again
we have fire on our burnt skin and it will heal
before you have to feel that again
I will help you mend
no one saw the statue in the road, or that the falling wind was cold
and you didn’t tell them all you had seen
a truer mark of you would only hide in me
and I still couldn’t set you free
or pull the only person back you had been

there’s nothing like the lonely feeling of falling
but I will be pulling you back
there’s nothing like the lonely feeling of mourning
I won’t let it find me again

Blood in the Orchard

smoke’s flowing from the musty pit, with the breakers low
and swelling coming from the orchard,
we’re losing him with all your woe, from the glory you have stolen
and his that you have changed
you may think that no one knows
but your mother’s gonna reap and then she’ll sow
you’re not a duty of mine, you’re there to walk your own line
I’m gonna tell people I know
someway you’ve been altered
I see the blood flow red down in the orchard
the trees are bound with oil and rags
the fruit lies bitten and eaten on the damp floor
the wings of birds have been clipped and picked
to save themselves from carrying him away
is this a glimpse of your troubled mind
into the barren mist of murder and seduction

In Your Way

you got your ways and I got mine
you got your own ways of spending time
the stars are falling all around your dress
the constellations point to your own sweet mess
you need to suffer, well I suffer too
I keep it inside and far from you
you throw it around and you see what sticks
I’m covered head to foot in your cold antics
you got your own ways that comfort
that involve yourself and my eldest brother
you take it on yourself, you take it on yourself
and me to find my place in your arms
and it’s a cold, cold turn
just a cold, cold turn in your way
you’re first to judge and last to lead
you’re last to act out and first to feed
you still stand when you see me kneel
and you’re not concerned about the way I feel

She Won't Leave

your coarse bloody veins, are eating away, they’re killing me
and now if she stays, I’m running away, from what I need
now that I’m older now, she won’t grow older with me
she won’t leave, and I won’t go, since none of us here will ever show,
she won’t ask, and I won’t say, no one here is ever gonna run away
the time is hurried, the night is heading down to the sea
my planted feet are pillars of weight only she can free
now that I’m older now she won’t grow older with me
her prism is open my bounty is bought we hold the keys

Devil Moon

devil moon, shows its face too soon at a hopeless time
fast old road, shut down in the winter cold at a quiet time
threw out my back, tending another crack on the picket line
the sweetest wind blows through my darling’s clothes when I’m inside
I can feel the seasons change, like I’m to blame
my industry has stretched to the pieces I’ve been holding
for the devil moon has eclipsed all I see, eclipsed all I see
and under its lights it may prove to be the killer of me

cat got your tongue, when you’re leading a victory song at a quiet time
and it’s a bad race won and a punctured lung at the starting line
